one years ago, Benny Goodman briefly lived up to their terrific name, with an insanely addictive hit single called “Sweet Georgia Brown”. There is so much to love about Benny Goodman, starting with incredible harmonies, songwriting chops and stellar stage presence. Since completing 0’s ‘If I Had You’, Benny Goodman fulfilled their contract with Blue Note Records and where under no obligation to release another album. Jazz Masters 33 touched my soul like nothing else.
Sweet Georgia Brown pretty much defines how I feel spiritually. Outside of the singles, my favorite song on Jazz Masters 33 is I’ve Found A New Baby. Memories Of You is a song that will not reduce you to tears but leave you thinking long after Jazz Masters 33 have ended. Vocal harmonies in this track are great and song structure is just right. Honeysuckle Rose is just simply stunning. After you’ve listened to Stardust, most everything else can’t hold up and is second rate. Jersey Bounce - My least favorite song on this album. Charming song, great melody. After about the third You Must Meet My Wife listen through, I began to believe this song is Benny Goodman’s essence. Somebody Loves Me defines beauty, yet is as unforgiving as an astringent stone. Within the first few notes of I Ain’t Got Nobody it’s perfectly clear that Benny Goodman is living this song. Poor Butterfly is one of my favorite songs by Benny Goodman. In A String Of Pearls Benny Goodman is at his best. I now have That’s A-Plenty as one of my personal favorites. Opening track Oh, Lady Be Good! shows the best of Benny Goodman.
