This is the first studio album from Benny Goodman since bad diagnosis in 0. Lead single “Blue Interlude” and “Bumble Bee Stomp” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. When you buy a Benny Goodman album, you know exactly what you’re getting! If you love Benny Goodman as much as I do, then Benny Goodman Smoke House Rhythm is the CD for you!
Bumble Bee Stomp is a fine track on any terms. Ciribiribin one is one of the better boring ones. In Could You Pass In Love? Benny Goodman is at his best. The sound of I Had To Do It is difficult to describe, as it seems to squirm in a sensual manner, unlike anything ever created. I Have Eyes is so unique, as each one of the songs is. In I Must See Annie Tonight the light shines equally on lyrics, vocals and instrumentation. I’ve Got A Date With A Dream is the albums lead single as well as biggest hit. Is That The Way To Treat A Sweetheart is just a great song and one well worth taking the time to give it a good listen. Musically Margie is superior to other tracks in Smoke House Rhythm. Russian Lullaby has a beautifully haunting disco flavor. Sing For Your Supper is gorgeous and different song. This is the most melodic ambitious and satisfying track in Smoke House Rhythm. The Flat Floogee make listening to Benny Goodman like being in some sort of time warp. This Can’t Be Love is the album’s biggest hit, I think. Topsy - My least favorite song on this album. What Have You Got That Gets Me? - I just love it. Nice and different song. You’re A Little Headache is possibly the best song Benny Goodman has come up. You’re Lovely, Madame actually sounds so joyous, that you can practically see a smile on Benny Goodman’s face.
