After seeing Sweet Georgia Brown (Django Reinhardt), I had to have a good Various Artists cd. This is one of the best Cd’s Various Artists has dropped to date. On Jazz Masters 60 album, Various Artists have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. Jazz Masters 60 is the best essence of Various Artists.
Jam Blues (Lionel Hampton & Oscar Peterson) - I just love it. I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm (Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong) gets you up and jumping. Last Night When We Were Young (Kenny Burrell & Gil Evans) is perfect. I loved Polka Dots And Moonbeams (Lester Young) the first time I heard it. Ricardo’s Dilemma (Oliver Nelson) has to be one of the most beautiful tracks on the entire album. Organ Grinder’s Ball (Jimmy Smith) - another great track from the Jazz Masters 60 album. The beautiful sound of this track makes you want to close your eyes and sway away with the music. Ballad (Gerry Mulligan) which is my favorite is a truly Various Artists sounding song. I like the idea behind Soul Sauce (Cal Tjader). This track is a fabulous selection of easy listening, suitable for any age, taste or occasion. Words Can’t Describe (Sarah Vaughan) is a bit of a show-tune. Once you hear Cocktails For Two (Coleman Hawkins & Ben Webster), you will listen to it over and over. Summertime (Chet Baker) is a romantic if not formulaic ditty. Various Artists offers the kind of music here that makes you reflect on yourself. In The Peanut Vendor (Herbie Mann) Various Artists is at his best.
