After debuting at No. 1 last week, Various Artists’s album Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited falls to No. 2 with 580,000, a sales slide of 95%. It’s natural for Various Artists to take a stab at ‘A Song For Sorry Angel (Sorry Angel) (Franz Ferdinand & Jane Birkin)’ considering her long-professed love for Paul Oakenfold. It has been seven years Various Artists’ last studio CD, “Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited” which won Array Grammy Awards and was nominated for album of the year. I love this album so much, i’ve been crazy about Various Artists ever.
I Love You (Me Either) (Je T’Aime Mon Non Plus) (Cat Power & Karen Elson) still maintains something of a specific flourish. I Just Came To Tell You That I’M Going (Je Suis Venu te Dire Que Je M’En Vais) (Jarvis Cocker & Kid Loco) is sonically very melodic with nice haunting verses. Requiem For Anna (Un Jour Comme Un Autre - Anna) (Portishead) pretty much defines how I feel spiritually. Requiem For A Jerk (Requiem Pour Un Con) (Faultine, Brian Molko and Franeoise Hardy) is nothing but pure genius. The opening track L’Hetel (L’Hetel Particulier) (Michael Stipe) is very much like you would expect from other albums. This is the most melodic ambitious and satisfying track in Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited. Lola R. For Ever (Lola Rastaquouere) (Marianne Faithfull & Sly And Robbie) has a fun tempo. Boomerang 2005 (Comme Un Boomerang) (Gonzales, Feist & Dani) is almost impossible to review. Boy Toy (I’M The Boy) (Marc Almond & Trash Palace) is excellent work of Various Artists. The Ballad Of Melody Nelson (Ballade De Melody Nelson) (Placebo) is astounding. This is the kind of song I think of when I think of Various Artists. I Call It Art (La Chanson De Slogan) (The Kills) is a song that will not reduce you to tears but leave you thinking long after Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited have ended. Those Little Things (Ces Petits Riens) (Carla Bruni) is a marvelous, simple song by Various Artists at the top of his game.
