It has been three years Curtis Mayfield’ last studio CD, “Curtis (Deluxe Edition)” which won Array Grammy Awards and was nominated for album of the year. This album has some very good songs like (Don’t Worry) If There’s A Hell Below We’re All Going To Go and The Other Side Of Town. Nowhere is this more so than on their re-working of Curtis Mayfield on ‘(Don’t Worry) If There’s A Hell Below We’re All Going To Go’. This is my first Curtis Mayfield Album and i must say i am blown away.
The Other Side Of Town - Well, here we get a bit more meaning. The Makings Of You sets the tone for the entire album. After about the third We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue listen through, I began to believe this song is Curtis Mayfield’s essence. Move On Up is the first taste of the new album. The sound in Miss Black America is really warm and Curtis Mayfield’s signature voice is still very much present. It is succeeded by an outstanding track, however: Wild and Free, which shows, blatantly, how much Curtis Mayfield has evolved as a singer. Give It Up is perfect work of Curtis Mayfield. I have all of Curtis Mayfield’s tracks and Power To The People (Demo) is probably the most his introspective effort. Underground (Demo) is astounding. A unique and uplifting song. Readings In Astrology (Demo) - arguably the best track on Curtis (Deluxe Edition) album. Such hits like Suffer (Demo) will leave you hooked. This is the kind of song I think of when I think of Curtis Mayfield. This song has very few things relative to that of it’s predecessor. (Don’t Worry) If There’s A Hell Below We’re All Going To Go (Backing Tracks, Takes 1 and 2) - is a breath or fresh air compared to many previous songs of Curtis Mayfield. (Don’t Worry) If There’s A Hell Below We’re All Going To Go (Edited Single Version) is beautiful, yet underrated track.
