On the England charts, superstar Carlos Gardel’s career stalled before it left the starting gate. This -song debut EP shows the promise that Carlos Gardel has. While no new Carlos Gardel album is in sight, the artist has been road testing new songs during 0 tour in Asia. I greatly enjoyed this CD.
Barrio viejo is a medium tempo tune. Paseo de Julio without a doubt is the standout song of Todo Gardel 1928-1929 Vol.2. This song stands out greatly from the others. In Fierrochifle you won’t find any flashy solos. It’s so catchy, it’s amazing. Cuando llora la milonga still maintains something of a specific flourish. Carlos Gardel is one of artists that allow his songs like Manos brujas to stand on their own and be heard. Aquel muchacho triste is almost impossible to review. Opening track Haragan shows the best of Carlos Gardel. Once you hear A contramano, you will listen to it over and over. One of the songs that always stick in my mind is Cruz de Palo because the melody in the chorus is so good. It is succeeded by an outstanding track, however: Como todas, which shows, blatantly, how much Carlos Gardel has evolved as a singer. Se llama mujer - I used to hate this song, but now it’s one of my favorites. I loved Por que me das dique the first time I heard it. Alla en la ribera is a pleasing, and full of overall coherence that goes beyond other creations. The opening track Trenzas negras is very much like you would expect from other albums. As always, Carlos Gardel’s lyrics are worth listening to again and again. It’s a great pleasure to listen to Segui mi consejo from the beginning to the end. This track is nearly perfect if not perfect.
