This disc has all of the essential Chuck Berry classics. The Great Twenty-Eight isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. There is no doubt that Chuck Berry has talent. Overall, I would highly recommend The Great Twenty-Eight CD.
Thirty Days has a fun tempo. You Can’t Catch Me is possibly the best song Chuck Berry has come up. This is probably my favorite song on the album. The opening track Brown Eyed Handsome Man is very much like you would expect from other albums. I loved Roll over Beethoven the first time I heard it. Havana Moon is one of the coolest songs Chuck Berry has ever recorded. School Days - This one is what it is: a powerful, primal invitation to love. Rock & Roll Music is simple, dignified and effective, Chuck Berry refusing to over-emote, and demonstrating that less is more. After you’ve listened to Oh Baby Doll, most everything else can’t hold up and is second rate. Nice and different song. In Sweet Little Sixteen Chuck Berry spins a tale you want to hear to the end. It’s so catchy, it’s amazing. Around and Around defines beauty, yet is as unforgiving as an astringent stone. Carol is a great opener for The Great Twenty-Eight. I hope to keep hearing Chuck Berry works for a long time to come. This is the most melodic ambitious and satisfying track in The Great Twenty-Eight. I think Sweet Little Rock & Roller is the best song Chuck Berry has ever done. Outside of the singles, my favorite song on The Great Twenty-Eight is Little Queenie. Almost Grown - arguably the best track on The Great Twenty-Eight album. Don’t judge Back in the U.S.A. on the first listening. Music of Let It Rock is gentle, never overbearing. I’ve found myself listening to Bye Bye Johnny back to back and back many times. This track is nearly perfect if not perfect. Song Come On is actually a funny song. Nadine is the funkiest number on the album. No Particular Place to Go is filled with very deep emotions that will truly touch your heart. This track is a great song that still never gets old.
